On December 12, 2024, a new team based in Papua New Guinea was announced to join the NRL for the 2028 season by ARLC chairman Peter V’landys, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Prime Minister James Marape. The intention to introduce three additional teams to the NRL by 2030 was confirmed by ARLC CEO Andrew Abdo and chairman Peter V’landys, with the possibility that up to two of these teams may be located outside Australia.
